This week in maths we have been learning about spirals. We learnt that we can see spirals in nature: roses, snail shell and our galaxy.
We started by looking at Archimedean Spirals. This is where the gap between the curves of the spirals stay the same. We learnt that the wider the gap between spirals, the shorter the spiral. We used protectors and rulers to create our own spirals.
We then created spirals using regular shapes. Regular shapes have sides that are all the same length and all their internal angles are equal in size. We had to use halving to find the mid point between two corners and then had to be accurate when we measured where the midpoint was. Again, we found out that shapes that had the fewer amount of sides created the shortest spiral. A pentagon create longer spirals than a triangle.
