In Year 2, we have been exploring spiritual songs of the Underground Railroad. Spiritual songs originated in the United States, and were sung by slaves in order to impart Christian values, describe the horrors of slavery and to help aid in communication between groups of slaves.
The Underground Railroad was a secret system which aided in slaves escaping to freedom. Secret messages about “trains bound for glory” and “freedom” were interwoven into the spiritual songs, to help aid in their escape. Can you identify any messages in our spiritual song?
