In Year 5 we have been exploring the magic of pop music. Pop music emerged as a softer alternative to rock and roll, often using electronic instruments, upbeat tempo, simple chord patterns and melodies that makes us want to get up and dance.
Did you know that most pop music uses the same, basic chord pattern including the first, fourth, fifth and sixth chords in a musical key? So in the Key of C, the chord pattern would include C, F, G and A minor. It is up to the composer to decide what order the chords should go in and to create an original, catchy melody that keeps fans coming back for more.
Check out Year 5 playing the hit ‘Savage Love’ – can you identify the chord pattern? Stay tuned for our students’ own pop compositions!
