In reception this week, we have been learning about money. Children were fascinated at the different coins and put them in order of value independently.
We also focused on the properties of coins and their shapes i.e a circular shape, a heptagon shape.
Children used everyday language to talk about the size of these coins i.e rounded, curved, small and big. Children also identified the colours of the coins including the colours brown/bronze, silver and gold as well as recognising the numerals embossed on the surface.
We set up a shop in our classes and had items of fruits and vegetables with different prices on. Children loved acting as a shopkeeper and customer as shown in the pictures. Children acting as the customers chose the correct coin from our maths table for the correct amount .
Children were also able to separate coins using tweezers ( pincer grip) to strengthen their fine motor skills.
Areas that were covered :
Maths:
Beginning to use everyday language related to time.
EAD:
Plays cooperatively as part of a group or to act out a narrative.
Making relationships:
Children take into account of one another’s ideas about how to organise their activity.
