This week in reception during science week, children carried out two different experiments. The first was a ‘Fireworks in a cup’ experiment. Children used different ingredients to create the different coloured fireworks . These ingredients were: oil, warm water and food colouring. Since our book of this week is ‘The Bog baby’, children were excited to use darker colours to create a home for The Bog Baby. Children took turns to create the outcome and really enjoyed seeing the colours mix.
The second experiment was creating ‘shaving foam rain clouds’. Firstly, children added different food colouring to water in different bowls and then squirted a generous amount of shaving foam on top of the water to create a ‘cloud’. They then added small amounts of coloured water onto the ‘cloud’ to create an amazing effect.

Children listened to instructions and follow them accurately , asking for clarification if necessary .

Understanding the world
Children know the properties of some materials and can suggest some of the purposes they are used for.
Children are familiar with basic scientific concepts such as floating, sinking, experimentation.
Exploring and using media and materials
Children develop their own ideas through selecting and using materials.
Through their explorations, they find out and make decisions about how media and materials can be combined and changed.
