We appreciate the description of mathematics found in the National Curriculum which reads: ‘Mathematics is a creative and highly inter-connected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.’
At Monteagle, we use the ‘Power Maths’ mathematics scheme to deliver a high-quality mathematics education to children from Year 1 – Year 6. This scheme supports a ‘mastery’ approach to the teaching and learning of mathematics in these year groups, and enables our children to meet and exceed the high expectations of the National Curriculum.
To support our pupil’s understanding, we also run four sessions a week of the Mastering Number at Reception and KS1 and Mastering Number at KS2. Mastering Number at Reception and KS1 aims to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children from Reception through to Year 1 and Year 2. The aim over time is that children will leave KS1 with fluency in calculation and a confidence and flexibility with number. Attention will be given to key knowledge and understanding needed in Reception classes, and progression through KS1 to support success in the future. Mastering Number at KS2 identifies that knowledge of multiplication and division and its applications forms the single most important aspect of the KS2 curriculum, and is the gateway to success at secondary school. This programme enables pupils in KS2 to develop fluency in multiplication and division facts, and a confidence and flexibility with number that exemplifies good number sense.
To ensure success for all, we match high expectations with comprehensive support for learners across the school providing additional individual and small group support as and when need arises.
