Year 5 have been investigating some of the inventions that have originated in China and attempted to understand and apply the theory by making basic versions of these themselves. Initially, they tested different types of paper to consider the properties and uses of each, then went on to learning about magnetism and compasses, making hanging compasses. Then then learned about using water and gravity to tell the time, then explored this by making their own water timers. The final lesson involved an investigation and testing of materials and their properties to gain an understanding of what materials were best to use in the construction of kites and why.
