This week in literacy, we’ve been exploring the wonderful book “I Love Me!” by Marvyn Harrison, founder of Dope Black Dads. It’s a fun and empowering book full of positive affirmations, designed to help little ones feel confident and stand tall. The children have really enjoyed the uplifting messages and engaging illustrations!
In our maths lessons, we’ve been using music to make learning fun, singing lots of counting songs. These songs help the children build their number sense and develop early mathematical skills in a playful way.
Phonics has been a busy area of focus, where we’ve been working on key skills such as:
Rhyming: Identifying and playing with words that sound alike.
Counting syllables: Breaking words into their smaller parts.
Segmenting and blending: Listening for sounds in words and putting them together.
Hearing initial sounds: Practicing recognising the first sound in words.
We’ve also made sure to incorporate plenty of fine motor activities, which are so important for building hand strength and coordination. These skills are crucial for tasks like writing and self-care, such as buttoning and using utensils. Some of the fine motor activities we’ve been doing include:
Threading beads
Building with blocks and puzzles
Using tweezers to pick up small objects
Cutting with scissors
Drawing and colouring
Playdough fun
Using tools like scoops, spoons, and shovels during sensory play
It’s been a productive and exciting week, and we’re so proud of the progress the children are making across all areas of their learning!
