This week, Year 5 have continued their learning about Earth and space with a fascinating investigation into how our planet moves around the Sun. We explored how this movement creates day and night, helping us to understand why we experience changes in light throughout the day.
To bring our learning to life, we headed outside and observed how shadows changed over time. Every five minutes, we recorded the position and length of our shadows, noticing how they moved as the Earth rotated. This hands-on activity helped the children see the effects of the Sun’s apparent movement across the sky.
Following this, we explored time zones and discovered how different places around the world experience different times of day simultaneously. The children were amazed to learn that while we might be having lunch, people on the other side of the world could be fast asleep!
It’s been an exciting week of discovery, and we encourage parents to continue the discussion at home—perhaps by looking at a world clock or noticing how shadows change throughout the day!
