This term, we have been talking about and exercising curiosity in our Monday assemblies. Curiosity is one of our five golden virtues, those virtues that we believe lead to success in school, in university, in the careers we choose and in life beyond.

Before half-term we became curious about air-pressure and our questioning and thinking on the subject led to us launching a water and air rocket. Great fun!

This morning we talked about how we might use the energy of a chemical reaction to take us even higher. We launched a test capsule using the reaction: citric acid + sodium bicarbonate → water + carbon dioxide + sodium citrate … that is, we mixed an Alka-Seltzer tablet in some water and closed it inside a film canister. The result was impressive.

Curious to learn more about chemical reactions we introduced ourselves to the periodic table which contains all 118 known chemical elements. We played this song and challenged ourselves to learn it by heart:

We look forward to seeing who perseveres with this challenge and how many elements they can recall in next weeks achievement assembly.
