This week in maths, we have been learning about 3D shapes. 3D shapes are important to learn as it allows children to understand and recognise their shapes and also their properties.

By learning about 3D shapes, children have shown that they can identify and organise visual information. It has also helped children learn skills in other curriculum areas. Learning about shapes also helps children understand other signs and symbols.

Key area of development:

Maths:

Beginning to  use mathematical names for ‘solid’ 3D shapes and their mathematical terms.

Shows an interest in shape and space by playing with shapes or making arrangements with objects.

Shows interest in shape by sustained construction activity or by talking about shapes or arrangements.

Children have learnt about a range of 3D shapes through engaging activities in the classroom. The 3D shapes they have learnt are:

Sphere

Cube

Cuboid

Cylinder

Cone

Square-based pyramid

Some activities that children have participated in are:
1)a 3D shape treasure hunt
2)matching the shape name to the 3D shape.

Take a look at some of the amazing pictures of the children taking part in some of the activities.
