This week in Year 1, we have been celebrating Black History Month by exploring the life of the renowned explorer Matthew Henson. We enjoyed learning about his extraordinary journey to the North Pole alongside Robert Peary in 1909. We engaged with captivating photographs from the expedition and contemplated Henson’s thoughts and feelings during his remarkable adventures. It was particularly intriguing to discover that he embarked on his maritime journey at the tender age of twelve, acquiring valuable skills that aided his future expeditions. To conclude our week, we had great fun constructing our own mini sleds, reflecting on Henson’s ingenuity in building and repairing the dog sleds used during his journey. We eagerly anticipate revisiting our learning about Matthew Henson when we commence our explorers unit later in the year.
