In Year 4 music we have been diving into the history of Caribbean Carnival. Carnival was first brought to the Caribbean by French colonisation. However, after the Caribbean countries won independence, the tradition of Carnival remained.
The Notting hill carnival in London started in 1966 as a protest against racism. Today its legacy continues, as one of the world’s biggest street parties, led by the British West Indian community, celebrating Black British culture.
Known for steel drums, singing and dancing, we have been creating our own Carnivals in Year 4, learning the traditional calypso song ‘Tingalayo’ and creating our own drum beats using chair drumming. We hope you enjoy our music making!
