Today, year 5 were visited by part of Barking and Dagenham’s waste minimalisation team. The Great British Spring Clean is a ongoing project set up to help improve neighbourhoods across the UK by getting communities involved in cleaning up rubbish and looking after their local area.
The visitors first hosted an assembly where they taught us about the huge amount of waste produced by humans each year and how harmful it is to our world. They also taught us about what can be recycled or reused and that we can get a longer life from many food products by freezing them rather than throwing them away.
We then donned hi-vis jackets and litter pickers and headed to the flower beds just outside school to clear them for our community garden project. The children really enjoyed picking up the litter as they were clearly inspired by the talk they had just received which had instilled a drive to improve the environment.
The children then went back to class and created designs for the flower beds that include lots of native plant species to encourage British wildlife.
This will be an ongoing project and we will be inviting students, parents and staff to get involved. We are so grateful to be a part of the wonderful Monteagle community!
