Year 6 pupils have been very busy improvising and composing their own pieces of music over the previous weeks. They began by learning a soul song called ‘My Best Friend’ which they learnt an instrumental for using five notes. They then improvised their own instrumental sections on the glockenspiel or keyboard using up to seven notes either independently or in pairs.

After spending some time practicing their improvisations they then initially turned their improvisations into compositions using a 4 bar graphic score. The following week they transformed their graphic scores into written notation which was a challenging process initially but one they truly excelled at using crotchets, quavers, rests and even triplets in some cases! We have some very creative and talented song-writers at Monteagle and I look forward to seeing more of what they produce throughout the year.
