What an incredible few weeks the Year 4 Reading Gladiators have had. Only last week, they hosted a critically acclaimed author, Linda Newbery, and now they have represented Monteagle Primary at the Barking and Dagenham Reading Gladiators challenge day!
The day began with an art challenge, which the Monteagle Gladiators excelled in. The challenge involved designing a bookmark, based on the books they had read over the year. Their creativity and knowledge of quantum physics impressed the judges and other competitors hugely, scoring them first place.
Before lunch, it was time for the knowledge and comprehension round. The Monteagle Gladiators were on top form, keen to answer ALL the questions. They gained first place again, showing an incredible knowledge of the books.
Finally, it was time for the crucial drama challenge. Having planned their own scene, for what happened next in Frank Cottrell-Boyce’s fabulous book ,’The Unforgotten Coat’, the Gladiators were feeling nervous. Luckily, when it came to their turn, they spoke both loudly and clearly, entertained the audience and demonstrated a clear understanding of the characters and the book. They were subsequently awarded third place for their acting prowess.
To end the day, everyone was awarded a certificate and the winners were announced…. Monteagle Gladiators! They jumped for joy and you couldn’t stop them (or their teacher) from smiling the whole way home.
It has been a pleasure being part of the Monteagle Gladiators this year. They have made their teacher, school and families extremely proud! Now their task is to share their love and enjoyment of books with the rest of the school.
