In our ‘My Independence’ lessons, we have been making jam sandwiches.

The main focus for this is to teach children how to independently make lunches or snacks for themselves for life outside of school. We know how important it is for our children to learn some basic life skills so we try to encourage this in so many different ways.

These lessons are split up into 3 sections;

  1. Understanding what we need to make food (plates, cutlery), and the safety of using these things as safety is still key to teach the children.
  2. Learning what ingredients we need and how to spread the butter onto the bread.
  3. Making the sandwich

We split our classes up in this way to ensure that the children have made the progress and understanding needed to complete the task each week. The overuse of information in one lesson can be overwhelming for some children. This is why we break the activity down to support and teach them all the required skills they need to complete the task in the future, and to complete the task independently.

Children loved the making of the sandwiches the most, of course! They loved spreading the butter and the jam across the bread. But most importantly, they loved tasting and eating the sandwiches they made.

Here are some pictures of the overall process from start to finish to make a jam sandwich.
