The children in Year 2 were very excited to be joined by their parents for one of their maths lessons this week. They are excellent mathematicians when doing simple addition and subtraction so it was time to step it up a notch and introduce addition with regrouping.
To help us understand this next step in addition we used dienes and our place value charts. Creating theĀ numbers we need to add helps us understand what numbers look like and where each digit needs to sit in our place value chart. Using the manipulatives we showed our parents that we need to add the ones first column first and how to regroup and exchange when theĀ number is bigger than nine. We were even challenged with exchanging and regrouping in the tens and hundreds.
By the end of our lesson our parents were able to do some addition using the dienes by themselves but with some help from us of course!
