This week the children are having a lot of fun using manipulatives (physical apparatus) to gain maths knowledge. Manipulatives help students learn by allowing them to move from concrete experiences to abstract reasoning.
Some of the activities children have participated in are:
Weighing objects using scales
Using numicon to recognise a number and making a tower using the same number of cubes
Making shapes on peg boards
Making a selected number of cookies using playdough
Please look on tapestry to see individual observations of your child taking part in a maths activity using manipulatives. You can also upload your child taking part in a maths activity at home for example, counting spoons, counting the people in your family, counting the number of steps whilst walking down the stairs, recognising your door number, finding shapes around the house and making a simple pattern using objects from around the house.
