Recently, our children in the EAL room have become budding scientists researching what substances will melt inside and outside the classroom, and how long it takes for these materials to melt. The materials we used included chocolate and ice cubes. They also observed the difference between an ice cube melting in the shade and an ice cube melting in the sun. We also found some materials do not melt at room temperature, such as metals and plastics.
Along the way everyone learnt some great new words to describe what was happening in their experiments such as runny, sticky, hard and soft. We also learnt about liquids and solids.
