In the Nursery we use the numicon maths resources to help teach maths concepts to the children. Numicon maths resources can be found all around the Nursery and the children eagerly use it in their indoor and outdoor play. Recently we have used numicon to help us recognise, count and sequence numbers from one to ten. During our observations of children we discovered how the children were using numicon in their learning and play and that is just want we like to see – children consolidating what they have learnt into meaningful play situations. We found children drawing numicon shapes, using them as cutting tools and cookie cutters in dough, creating their own numicon numbers using large brushes and water or drawing them using felt pens on large sheets of paper. Some children even created small structures using both the pegs and numicon shapes.
