This week the children in Year 2 travelled back in time to September 20th 1899 and experienced a Victorian school day. Their Victorian teacher was Miss Wilberforce. Their classroom was set out in rows with the flag of the United Kingdom hanging on the wall and a picture of Queen Victoria on the desk as was the norm for this period.
To begin with the children had to line up outside their classroom in two separate lines – boys and girls. They were then shown into their classroom and told where to sit. Once in class Miss Wilberforce inspected their hands (front and back) and was delighted to report that all children had passed the inspection.
The children were then shown a range of punishments that were used in schools during the Victorian period with some children getting the chance to try them out. These included the dunce hat, back straightener, finger stocks and the cane.
Just like a Victorian classroom the children then had to practice their handwriting and their maths. Miss Wilberforce was very impressed with the work the children completed.
The children thoroughly enjoyed their Victorian school day with many of them saying they would have liked to go to school in the Victorian times.
