This week some of our classes wanted to show some of the sensory and role play activities they have been doing in their English lessons. Some children are reading the book, ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ and have been completing sensory activities based on what the book entails. This week, for example, the children were reading the part where they have to go through the river. To recreate this in some way, the children were walking through tuff trays filled with ripped up blue tissue paper to represent the water.
Some children took off their shoes and socks to feel the sensation on their feet, whereas some children did not want to. They climbed into the tray and repeated the sentence ‘We have to go through it.’ When they stepped into the tuff tray, they repeated the words ‘splish, splosh’, which is said by the characters as they trudge through the river. The children loved playing with the tissue paper, jumping in and out as it was a real river.
Some of our other children are reading the book, ‘Gorilla’, and are really enjoying the book so far. This lesson was represented through role play activities. As you can see from the pictures below, the children were reading the story together where the girl is taking the gorilla to the zoo to see other animals. The children had to pretend to be the little girl and the gorilla, and have a conversation about where they were going to go for a day out. The children did really well to jump into the role of the characters and participated throughout the activity and put so much effort into becoming the characters.
