Year 1 have had an exciting time investigating, designing, sewing and customising their own puppets in Design Technology.
Initially we looked at and investigated the different types of puppets available and how they were used around the world in different ways. They next designed and make their own finger puppets.
Having developed and understanding of how materials can be attached together, leaving one side unstuck, to create a pocket, the children had a try of developing the skill of sewing. They threaded plastic needles and attempted different stitch types on Binkamat (a material with holes in).
Once practiced, they were ready to design their own glove puppets that they would go on to sew together using felt and other chosen materials. Following their designs, the children sewed their glove puppets together and then chose specific materials they felt would be suitable to decorate their puppets with so that they matched their design as best as possible.
When finished, the children evaluated their own and others puppets against the success criteria.
